Models Own Disco Heaven

Another Models Own polish, this time from the new Hedkandi collection. Disco Heaven is a very pretty gold glitter topcoat with iridescent green-blue hexagonal glitter in the mix.

From my point of view, this is definitely a topcoat polish. At four coats it doesn’t quite cover the nail enough to wear alone – you can still distinctly make out the free edge, and the gold in the polish seems to give an orange cast to the nail, making it look more stained than it actually is. However I’m sure if you layered it up enough this wouldn’t be a problem. The blue, sadly, doesn’t really show up unless you are looking closely.

Application:

The 3rd and 4th photos show the polish at 3 coats –  not by any means opaque. Although like many glitters, the light reflection from the polish does help to disguise the nail beneath. The polish dried quickly, and also dried quite smooth. I guess this can be attributed to the small proportion of glitter to clear polish – the clear polish must help smooth things out, I think? So in that vein, I personally don’t see a need for a topcoat. Again with Models Own not being Big-3-free, the polish had a strong chemical smell, so I would recommend you apply it in a well ventilated area.

I did a little swatch of Disco Heaven over Rimmel London Black Cab – a plain black creme, to see if the iridescent blue glitter would show up better (you’ll have to excuse the mess that is my nails!) :

Models Own Hedkandi Disco Heaven Gold Glitter Iridescent Blue top coat hexagonal square glitter layered over black spring release 2012 close upSorry for the rubbish lighting – it was literally the only light in which I could capture the blue glitter in at all! Hopefully you can see it, a little bit? While I love the idea of the blue iridescent glitter, it’s just too pale for me and it only really shows up (in real life) under bright light – it’s just too subtle to make it this polish worth the £5 price tag, for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the polish and a gold glitter is always a good staple, but if I was to design it, I’d put in opaque blue glitter and make sure it stands out against the rest of the gold glitter (oh and get rid of the Big-3!).

Maybe I’m just too fussy – what do you think about this one? I suppose another way to save yourself some pennies is if you already have Maybelline Flash Cosmic glitter polish and any old gold glitter top coat, this look is easily re-creatable.

Have you tried any of the Models Own Hedkandi polishes? What do you think of them? I also picked up ‘Hedonist’, a neon coral colour. I have yet to decide how much I like it! I do really like the look of ‘Ibiza Mix’ , but my Boots seems to be permanently sold out of it. I am also a big fan of all the companies really pushing the boundaries with nail polish lately, it feels like they just keep getting better and more unique! This Spring has been really good for we nail polish addicts, not so good for our purses…!

W7 Green Dazzle

Firstly, I want to say thank you to the lovely Emma at Lush Looks, who did a swap with me 😀 and this was one of the polishes she sent me! I can’t get W7 where I live and I’ve been dying to try them for ages.

W7 Green Glitter nail polish Blue gold square glitter dense 2 coats sparkle So the close-up is a bit blurred :s sorry! Hopefully you can see that Green Dazzle is actually made up of blue and yellow square glitter – soo cool! I love that. I didn’t actually realise they were square til I zoomed in. I love how even though they’re blue and yellow, the overall effect is a multi-dimensional green colour. Amazing!

Application:

The photos all show 2 coats of Green Dazzle. While in the photos, the free edge of my nail shows through in patches, it really isn’t visible in person, nor is the pink of my nail. I think the camera picks up a lot more than the eye can see lol. The polish dried quickly, like most glitters. It has a very strong chemical odor, not the usual ‘nail polish smell’, so I’d make sure you apply it in a well ventilated area. Green Dazzle dries very gritty, like most glitters. I applied one coat of topcoat, which didn’t really make a difference; I reckon you’d need a few coats of topcoat for a smooth finish.

I really do love this polish, despite the smell and the grittiness – definitely worth it for the amazing sparkles and the lovely green effect. I am also very happy that it only took 2 coats to look opaque on my nails! 🙂

Have you guys tried any W7 polishes? Where do you find them (in the UK?)

Thank you again to the lovely Emma for providing this for me, I love it!! Keep an eye out for the other polishes she sent me 😉 Hope you are all well, I’m about to go to the gym (yes… me, really!)

Barry M Lavender Hexograms

This is a lovely polish I coveted for a long time. I know it’s probably best used as a glitter topcoat but it looks very very pretty over bare nails, as long as you don’t have overly stained nails 😀 unless you’re looking closely, the free edge is barely visible as the glitter is so reflective.

These photos all showed 3 coats. Next is a photo showing the buildability of the polish 🙂

So, as you can see, it’s never really going to be ‘opaque’. However, as I mentioned before, it’s so reflective and sparkly that the nail beneath isn’t all that visible. Still, it makes a very pretty topcoat :). Lavender Hexograms is essentially a load of lilac square glitter along with silver microglitter, suspended in a clear nail polish. I love the silver microglitter, it gives such a nice touch. Not sure I understand where ‘hexograms’ came from in the name ;).

Application:

Lavender Hexograms dries at about the usual rate of a non-glitter polish. It did take a little bit longer than usual, but I have a feeling that this was due to the fact that I was pushing the squares around so the layers may have ended up quite thick. I don’t think it’s much of a problem at one or two coats, so it should be fine as a topcoat. I did notice that because the squares are quite large, they did need to be ‘aligned’, as the brush drags them to the end and off the nail as you polish. It’s not too much of a bother but worth knowing if you’re one of those people who doesn’t like the unevenness glitter topcoats can give you.

This is another one that my mum bought me directly from the Barry M website – I’ve never seen it before anywhere else.

This polish gets a huge thumbs up from me for it’s uniqueness – I’ve never seen a topcoat with square glitter and the purple makes it’s ever so pretty. What do you think?

Barry M Green Glitter

First off, I’ve been having a play around with my blog, as I’m sure my returning visitors will notice, pretty much everything but the content has changed! It’s likely to change more in the coming weeks, I’m not totally happy with it yet. I’ve made many adjustments to the original theme thanks to my Andy. I can’t pretend to be a computer whiz… Andy did pretty much everything, I managed to change the font coding on my own but that was it!!

Now this lovely glitter. It has won my heart! The best I can think to describe it is AstroTurf green. The texture kind of makes me think of AstroTurf too. I apologise in advance; the pictures all seem to either pull a little more aquamarine than in real life, or make the polish look paler/less dense than it really is. My camera doesn’t seem to want to play ball lately. I can assure you, it’s a very true green, no blue here!

Party Nails!

Okay so here are my New Years nails… only about a month and a half late! I’ve been so busy, it just hasn’t happened. I’m sorry.

This is two coats of OPI Divine Swine followed by one coat of Barry M Once Upon a Time

I love this combo as it’s very much pink but the holographic bar glitter of Once Upon a Time really jumps out. The glitters both dry relatively quickly. Once Upon a Time takes longer as it’s largely clear nail polish with the bar glitter suspended in it. Also it’s worth mentioning you need to shake the bottle first in order to get the bar glitter to come out! I’m not even going to talk about removing it…!

What do you guys think?

Nearly finished my placement, I’ve handed in my case study and performed my presentation so there’s nothing to stop me blogging any more 😀
