Boots 17 Spring Petal

Spring Petal is a lovely polished released as part of 17’s Spring Collection, which consists of four polishes. Boots currently has a 3 for 2 offer on all 17 cosmetics.

I have to confess that I picked Spring Petal up as my ‘free’ polish along with Juicy and Glisten – I initially mistook it for ‘just another pink shimmer’ and nothing special. My mind is totally changed, want to see why?

Boots 17 Spring Petal Spring Collection 2012 nail polish Lasting Fix pink shimmer rose UK This is SUCH a pretty pink, I can’t even describe it! It has a wonderful finish, almost like rubber, yet it dries super shiny. The finish is similar to that of BeautyUK Turquoise Shimmer, which I think can be attributed to the fact that the shrimpy-pink creme base is packed with a slightly darker pink shimmer. It’s a very unique effect, and I love it!

The polish also appears different in different lights – as the pictures hopefully show. I think this is due to the difference in colour between the shimmer and the base colour – subtle enough that it’s not a duochrome though, you can’t really see the colour difference on the nail, it just gives that colour-changing effect! The polish looks a very blue-toned pink in some lights and an orangey-pink in others.

Application:

The pictures all show 3 coats. The polish is actually pretty much opaque at 2 coats, but I had a wee denting-disaster which necessitated the extra layer. Spring Petal dries quickly. The polish applies beautifully, no streaking at all, and dries to a very high-shine finish. The only problem I noted was that nail imperfections are visible through Spring Petal (see my index finger in the 1st and 4th photos for reference! I nicked my nail while shaving my legs :s!). It’s not something that bothers me personally, but if it does for you, I’d recommend using a ridge filler before applying Spring Petal.

What do you think?! Soo pretty, right? Another reason I thought I wouldn’t like this was because it seemed very similar in colour to Barry M Pink Flamingo, and Boots 17 Pink Grapefruit, so I compared them for you! All polishes are at 3 coats.

Spring Petal is similar to Pink Flamingo in base colour, but with the obvious addition of the pink shimmer. They definitely aren’t the same though. Pink Grapefruit is way out, think I might have to re-do those swatches on it in the near future!!

What do you guys think of Spring Petal? I think you can probably guess my thoughts! I’m considering going back for Mellow Yellow, the final of the four Spring releases. Have any of you tried the Spring collection polishes yet? What did you think of them? 🙂

Boots 17 Juicy

Another of the lovely Boots 17 Spring collection 2012 polishes, and another unique one at that! This one reminds me of tulip stems, it’s almost exactly that colour!

On the left is a close up. I wanted you to see the green shimmer running through this, it’s a few shades darker than the polish itself and mostly shows up as a kind of white-ish reflect, but it definitely doesn’t get lost on the nail. I love the green shimmer, it’s not something I’d have thought would work but it looks gorgeous! Juicy is a limey-yellowy green. It’s one of those colours that won’t work on all skin tones – I think I can just about get away with it, but it will look fab on a darker skin tone. It’s the perfect Spring green, puts me in mind of new shoots coming through and sticky buds and all Springy things 😀 I love it! So unique too! Juicy is a Lasting Fix polish… I have to be honest with you and tell you that I never wear polish long enough to test the wear… sorry! 🙁

Application:

Juicy was actually sheer – in the pictures I’m wearing three coats and I feel like it could have benefited from a fourth, as the free edge of my nail was still visible in certain lights. The polish also dried quickly so the extra coats shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The finish is a lovely, slightly rubbery one, but the green shimmer gives a wonderful illusion of glossiness. I didn’t wear top coat with this one but I imagine it would make the shimmer really come alive.

What do you guys think? Have you tried Juicy, or Glisten, or the other two polishes in the Spring collection range? At £2.99 per bottle you can’t really beat this, and add in the fact that Boots currently have an offer on all 17 cosmetics at 3 for 2, it’s hard to resist!

I’m really loving the Spring releases this year, it feels like the ‘drugstore’ brands are really starting to push the boat out from the obligatory Spring pastels, which is so nice (I was never much of a pastel person… don’t hate me!). I love the bright colours, it really gets me in the mood for warmer weather. What have you found in terms of Spring releases? 🙂 I really want to see what GOSH and Barry M come up with this year!

Boots 17 Glisten

So Boots 17 have come out with a new Spring 2012 collection, in which we find four brand new Spring-themed nail polishes! I have Glisten to show you today.

Pretty, right?! It puts me in mind of the gorgeous sunsets we get come summer time. I can’t quite work out the base colour, it’s kind of a pinky-rose colour and gives the polish a lovely dusky finish. The polish is packed with fine gold shimmer and the combination is stunning. I can’t think when I saw a ‘drugstore’ polish look this good! It’s very unique and I LOVE it!! It looks amazing in the sun.

Colour-wise, it’s close enough to my skin tone for it to be subtle-ish in that people have to look twice to double check you’re actually wearing nail polish and it’s not just that your nails are glowing gold! This would be another polish I’d wear for a posh do.

Application:

Glisten is sheer. The pictures show three coats – this was sufficient to cover the free edge but if you’re fussy about visible nail line you’ll want a fourth coat. The polish dried quickly, as is often the case with Boots 17 polishes, so a fourth coat shouldn’t be too much of a faff. Something about the finish makes me not want to wear topcoat, which can only be a good thing, right?

The finish is actually quite similar to that of GOSH Golden Dragon, in that the murky base gives quite a pull on the overall colour of the polish. The polish itself is reminiscent of those No.7 seasonal ltd edition polishes that came out last year, but I never bought them so I can’t compare them.

Boots 17 currently have all cosmetics on offer at 3 for the price of 2, and this one is well worth snatching up! At only £2.99 for the bottle it’s really amazing for what you get on the nail.

What do you think? Do you love this as much as I do?! 😀

OPI Rainbow Connection (and layering combinations!)

Sooo… I’ve always been one of those ‘oglers-from-afar’ when it comes to American nail polish brands (purely because of the price), I usually pick out my favourites, put them on a wishlist then realise the wishlist total comes to £100+ and think “Oh my God, step away from the laptop Emma, put your debit card DOWN!”. So it’s quite rarely that I actually buy more than one polish from a collection, and if I do so, it’s usually long after I’ve seen the collection. But then OPI came up with the wonderful glitters of the Muppets Collection and I am on such a glitter kick that of course, I had to have them! That and the fact that ASOS had a 25% for students day meant that I simply couldn’t resist. I bought three of the six glitters in the collection, the first of these being Rainbow Connection.

I wanted to not only show you Rainbow Connection but also what it looks like layered over different polishes. So here we go 🙂 lots of pics btw, hope I don’t crash your browsers!

2 coats Rainbow Connection over 2 coats My Fair Lady

So hopefully these pictures give you an idea of how the polish looks alone. As far as I can work out, there are 6 colours involved: orange, yellow, turquoisey-blue, green, red-violet, and silver. There are 2 types of glitter involved – small hexagonal glitter and large hexagonal glitter. It’s important to be aware that this larger glitter doesn’t always lie flat and can catch on things, which is why, every time I’ve worn this, I’ve worn a generous coat of topcoat.

Black: Rimmel Black Cab. White: Barry M Matt White.

Index and middle fingers are both 1 coat of Rainbow Connection over 2 coats of the base colour. Ring and pinkie fingers are both 2 coats of Rainbow Connection over 2 coats of the base colour.

I looooove how it looks on the middle finger!

The coloured glitter really ‘pops’ when layered over the bold black and white – I love this combination, particularly over black.

Thumb to pinkie finger (base colours): Boots 17 Fury, Barry M Spring Green, Barry M Yellow, Missguided Misstaken, Eyeko Saucy Polish.

All shown with 1 coat of Rainbow Connection over 2 coats of base colour.

Thumb to pinkie finger (base colours): Barry M Cyan Blue, GOSH Attitude, Barry M Bright Purple, Boots 17 Pink Grapefruit, Rimmel Your Majesty.

All shown with 1 coat of Rainbow Connection over 2 coats of base colour.

I don’t know about you guys, but I definitely prefer Rainbow Connection over black, white, dark blue, gold, or silver. Somehow the rest just don’t do it for me, but I hope I’ve helped someone in doing this 😛 I did notice, just by the way, that Rainbow Connection does look a lot better over shimmer polishes than it does over cremes, so maybe I’ll do another post on that soon!

I have to say… there’s something about this one that makes me think ‘treasure trove’! I’m not so keen on Fury on its own as it clashes with my skin a bit, but paired with Rainbow Connection it looks ah-may-zing!

Application:  Rainbow Connection itself is those six different colours of glitter (and 2 different sizes) suspended in a clear base. The glitter is rather sparse, but in my opinion, that makes for a rather good layering glitter 😛 it was quite easy to push the glitter into place if you’re that way inclined, but it does give a fairly even spread of glitter. I have no idea how many coats it would take to make it opaque 😛  It did require quite a thick coat of topcoat to ensure that the larger pieces of glitter weren’t semi-attached and ready to cling onto any loose material it could get hold of. The polish dried quickly so the topcoat requirement wasn’t a problem. I did notice that without the top coat, the clear base seemed to dull the glitter almost, and the topcoat certainly brought it to life!

Now I know that this is VERY similar to Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday, some bloggers go so far as to say they are dupes, but after careful research on Google 😉 I discovered this wonderful Happy Birthday vs Rainbow Connection comparison. So for those of you who are wondering, the general consensus is that they are not dupes – the hexagonal glitter in Happy Birthday is considerably smaller than in Rainbow Connection.

This one will be PERFECT for the party season! 😛 I personally loooooooove this polish to bits, and I have had so many compliments on it at university. People have started paying attention to the fact that my nails are different practically every day – haha! Sorry this is a bit of a long, wordy post, I just seem to have so much to say! 😛

Also, kudos to ASOS Customer Services – at the checkout I was only given 20% off but they refunded me the extra 5% off within 2 days of my order!

Hope you are all doing well my lovelies, give me your thoughts on Rainbow Connection!

Boots 17 Black and Gold Glitter Crackle Topcoat

Hello girlies (and guys… any guys other than my boyfriend read this?), I saw this in Boots and absolutely HAD to get it, no question. Aesthetically a wonderful idea.

Layered over China Glaze Strawberry Fields, my new favourite ever polish (well, possibly..) Google it!
All pics shown with topcoat.
So here we are. I love it! I have a couple of pointers about this one though:
  • It looks best over a light colour such as white, silver, pale blue, pale pink, mint green or neon pink etc. – the gold glitter drowns out darker colours so the crackle effect isn’t as noticeable. Hopefully I’ll get a few pics up to demonstrate the light colours thing.
  • It doesn’t crackle as much as other polishes – I find the thinner you spread it, the more it crackles… but then you lose some of the glitter. It takes a bit of getting used to.
  • The glitter tends to all stay at the base of the nail (or wherever you start painting from) and I’ve gone over some areas with more than one stroke, which may account for less crackling.
  • It crackles more if you blow on it as it dries!
  • It dries matte, which can dull the contrast between the crackle and the base so it’s worth putting a topcoat on.
  • It is a typical glitter, it will take that extra bit of rubbing with the remover to get it off!
Despite all of this, it has an amazing effect, and it does look AH-MAY-ZING on le nails. I’ve never really been that excited about the crackle trend but this one I LOVE. Boots is onto a winner! I’m hoping for a black with silver or red glitter next 😉
The crackle retails at £3.99, and a little birdie (well actually, the Boots website) tells me that they also have a purple crackle in too! I have to say, I quite love the fact that Boots went for gold crackle then black & gold glitter crackle and purple crackle, rather than the standard black then silver, gold, purple and pink, like every other brand seems to have done. Thumbs up Boots!
How are you all? I have so many exciting (well, to me) polishes coming up. I just don’t want to overload you all haha.
